Mount Elgon Hotel is a grand colonial building dating back to the 1950's that is located in the peaceful and tranquil leafy suburbs of Mbale in eastern Uganda.
Mount Elgon Hotel was recently renovated and is a great choice for travelers to Mbale. The hotel has been transformed into a modern establishment, while leaving its colonial character and its peculiar atmosphere. It is a unique combination of last century ambiance, powerful colors and great materials.
There are thirty rooms, two bars, an extraordinary restaurant and magnificent gardens at your disposal. The renovated rooms come in Executive, Superior and Plus categories and are designed with simplicity in mind - straight lines, wooden floors, and soothing combination colors of blues, light wood and white. The en suite private bathrooms also provide similar smoothing atmosphere. Air conditioning, a comfortable sitting area, private balcony, writing desk, satellite television (DSTV) and telephone are also provided.
Their restaurant offers a combination of local and international cuisines that include buffets, pizzas and pastas that are prepare by chefs using market fresh ingredients giving something different from the usual hotel food. The restaurant also caters for banqueting and cocktail for up to 300 persons.
‘Roots’ lounge bar that is inspired by the rock paintings site in Nyero gives a cavernous atmosphere. The counter is shaped as a boulder and with the torches on the wall. As one of the recurring symbols of Nyero rock paintings is the sun, the walls are painted with warm saffron yellow while at night, you get a bit of starry sky over the counter. The sitting area offers bistro tables, armchairs and sofas. All kind of drinks and snacks, from morning to late at night are served and there is a pool table and satellite television (DSTV).Â
Located next to the mini golf course is a second bar called Volcano bar. It is an open air shady venue where you can relax after a busy day or putt a few golf balls if you are feeling sporty.
There are seven meeting venues that are available for business conferences and banqueting. They range from hosting 8 to 250 people. Facilities like a LCD projector, TV, VCR, DVD, microphone, computer, secretarial services are part of the package.
If you are interested in sightseeing, day or half day trips can been organized to Sipi falls, Nyero Rock paintings and to the coffee production area on Mount Elgon.
For those passionate about nature, a day’s trip to the Forest Exploration Center on the mountain is ideal whereby you can enjoy many guided forest walks. Hikers find the hotel ideal to start climbing to the top of Mount Elgon. The informative and very helpful National Park Headquarters are just across the road and they can help you getting organized for the trekking.
